We recently wrapped up at EAA AirVenture, the world’s largest aviation event held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. During the show, we demonstrated our drone delivery service in one of the most challenging environments - the bustling airspace above AirVenture.

Melbourne has one of the best food scenes in the world, is the food delivery capital of Australia, and starting today, is the largest metro area in Australia where Wing drone delivery is available.

Wing and Apian are working with Medtronic to provide medical drone delivery services to Blackrock Clinic and St. Vincent’s Private Hospital. 

I have said that 2024 is the year of drone delivery. Today marks a significant milestone along this path as the President has signed into law the FAA Reauthorization Bill following overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress. At Wing, we are encouraged by what we see in the law’s final language and are excited to work with the FAA on implementation of the law’s provisions over the months to come.

That's why we've implemented a multi-layered "detect & avoid" system to enable us to safely integrate our aircraft into complex airspace. 

Demand for last-minute grocery delivery has arrived, with 44% of respondents seeking an immediate, reliable assist on foods they need.

Guess where the busiest airport in the world was this week? London? Dubai? New York? It was actually in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Every year, this midwestern city is the site of AirVenture, the world’s largest aviation event with companies around the world showcasing the biggest and best aviation has to offer. This year, we added some tiny planes to the mix with demonstration flights of Wing’s drone delivery platform throughout the week.

Drone delivery has been making headlines in recent years as a promising last mile delivery solution. With its ability to deliver small packages quickly and efficiently without traffic congestion and other sources of friction that inhibit ground delivery methods, drone delivery can revolutionize the way businesses operate.

If you’ve been shopping at a big box store, local shop, or grocery store in the last few years, you’ve likely noticed something different when you pull into the parking lot: parking spaces reserved for curbside pickup. The popularity of curbside pickup exploded during the pandemic, growing by 200 percent overall, and up to 700 percent for some retailers. And this growth is here to stay: 33 percent of adults who started using curbside pickup during the pandemic say they expect to continue using it.

After a year of successful operations in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, we’re excited to share that we will be expanding our drone deliveries on the northeastern end of the City of Frisco with a series of summer events.

Wing’s progress can be charted along the increasingly dense environments in which we’ve been able to operate: from rural farms to lightly populated suburbs to more dense suburbs to large metropolitan areas like Brisbane, Australia, Helsinki, Finland, and the Dallas Fort Worth metro area in Texas.

Global consultancy Accenture recently conducted a study to determine the benefits of drone delivery for last mile delivery in Ireland, particularly in the congested greater Dublin area.

When it comes to drone delivery, seeing really is believing and we’re going to be bringing drone delivery to events so that more people can experience it. Until recently, that was only possible at one of our existing facilities, but not anymore! 

 

If there is one clear trend that defines Wing’s progress in 2022, it’s that this is the year when we began to see what drone delivery at scale can really look like.

Before we dig in, I want you to take a moment to imagine a commercial drone operator. Where are they? What are they wearing? Are they holding anything?

Let me guess: you’re imagining a person standing outside with their eyes on the sky, a high visibility vest on their back and a set of joysticks under their thumbs.

If that’s what you had in mind, you have a pretty accurate sense of what a job in this industry has looked like for the past decade or so – but it’s time to reimagine that role.

 

How do you get a package from a drone to the ground? That’s a challenge we spent a lot of time trying to tackle. There are different ways you can accomplish this. You can drop it. But eggs and coffee tend to react badly to that.

Here at Wing we spend a lot of time thinking about how to move packages through the sky. Solving the problem of on-demand delivery will always require a variety of vehicles. Just as the ideal vehicle for carrying a ton of gravel would be a dump truck rather than a sedan, the ideal aircraft to carry a bottle of medication is not the same as the best one to deliver a gallon of milk, and neither is suited to deliver a refrigerator.
